“Independence Before Interdependence” – Dr. Andreo Spina

“Independence Before Interdependence” – @DrAndreoSpina Shoulder/Neck Complex In the clinic a week doesn’t go by without @sanchise387 or myself seeing a new client complaining of a “stiff neck or shoulder. Often the cases that we encounter are not issues of connective tissue extensibility but rather a lack of motor control. Due to chronic poor posturing and lack of movement, clients will often lose proper neurological control of the humerus and cervical spine. A lack of independence of movement between the shoulder girdle and cervical spine will result in an increase of neurological tone in the surrounding structures often causing the “stiff/sore neck” that many clients gripe about. Following some hands-on manual treatment and breathing drills to reduce the local tissue tone we will often institute the following progressions to begin re-establishing control of the neck and shoulder. The idea of the following drills is to actively articulate one joint structure while the other one remains still. Top: Sphinx Cervical Controlled Articulations: x 5-10 each Move the neck slowly through full ROM with maximum tension. Drive head movement with the eyes/tongue Quadruped Cervical Articulations: x 5-10 each Screw your hands into the ground. Keep tension throughout the drill. Move the neck slowly through full ROM with maximum tension. Drive head movement with the eyes/tongue Middle: Supine TGU Cervical Rotations: x 5-10 each Connect the shoulder to the torso. Keep tension throughout the drill. Move the neck slowly through full ROM with maximum tension. Drive head movement with the eyes/tongue Supine TGU Shoulder Rotations: x 5-10 each Maintain a packed, neutral neck position. Rotate the humerus slowly through full ROM with maximum tension. Bottom: Elbow TGU Cervical Rotations: x 5-10 each Same cues as above but ensure that the downside shoulder is packed and stable throughout the drill. Elbow TGU Shoulder Rotations: x 5-10 each Same cues as above but ensure that the downside shoulder is packed and stable throughout the drill. -@kev_in_carr @sanchise387 @collectmomentsnotthingz @perform_better
