Topic #2: Rebooting Our Tech Addiction
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Replace external reinforcement with internal purpose”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now I understand the irony of you reading this post on your phone, on Instagram but you can put your phone away when you are done reading this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The constant buzzing of the phone, checking of texts and posting for likes drives many of us unconsciously into anxiety-like states as we are constantly draped in technology and hounded by our own social media.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s not to say tech and social platforms aren’t valuable. They undoubtedly are. How else could you be reading this? However, stress is stress no matter what form it comes in. Whether a lion is chasing you or your boss is texting you, your human stress response hardly differentiates. Fight or flight is a valuable physiological state for your brief escape from the lion but not so healthy for day to day existence.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Constantly being in a heightened state of arousal eventually will break us down, damage our immune system and drive the underlying processes behind chronic disease. All of us need to learn how to disconnect and from stress and tech and allow time to recover.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How Can We Disconnect?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔺Go for daily tech free walks (No phone, no watch, no headphones)
🔺Try going to the gym without headphones or your iPhone.
🔺Avoid checking your phone in wait lines and keep your phone outside of your bedroom.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do you disconnect? Let us know in the comments!
