Book of The Month: Food Rules by Michael Pollan Week 1: Eat Food

Movement As Medicine Book of The Month: Food Rules by Michael Pollan
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is my go to starter book when I first start discuss nutrition with clients. There are plenty of diet camps and nutritional strategies out there but for most people at the end of the day the first step in the right direction when it comes to food choices is to simply begin eating like an adult.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Or as @michael.pollan says: “Eat Real Food. Mostly Plants. Not Too Much.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each week this month we’ll focus on one of these approaches and give you 3 strategies to help improve your nutrition.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Week 1: “Eat Real Food”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The best way to begin improving your health and losing fat via nutrition is to begin selecting more nutrient dense foods for your meals. Very often Nutrient Dense foods will provide higher satiety with less negative metabolic impact that nutrient rich and higher calorically dense foods.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what habits can we employ that we’ll ensure we begin picking better foods while shopping?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔺Avoid foods pretending to be something they are not. Foods that imitate other foods or are altered from their original form typically include a number of additives, artificial ingredients or added sugar. Think things like margarine, “low fat” or “lite” products.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔺Shop on the periphery of the super market. Prioritize the meat, fish, vegetables and fruit. Skip the convenience aisles.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔺Eat foods that will eventually rot. Everything that was once living (meat, fish, fruit and vegetables) will all eventually spoil if it isn’t eaten of frozen. These foods also tend to carry much higher nutrient density and lower caloric density.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Give these habits a try this week and let us know how it goes!
